Unique images by veteran photographer Liebenberg are included, taken in stealth where cameras were outlawed, and because he managed to get to both sides of the conflict. The book traces the marks left by war on individuals on both sides, as much as on the region that was the theatre of operations Ć¢€“ on its landscape, its cultural and its political life. It follows the conflict through to the aftermath the arrival of the United Nations transitional authority and the advent of democracy in Namibia, showing many of the fault lines exposed in the process. The photographs, mostly in black and white, in large format, speak eloquently for themselves, with captions reduced to the minimum. No blame is apportioned in this, southwestern AfricaĆ¢€™s Vietnam.

With historically contextualizing introduction by historian Hayes.

"This photographic illustrated book covers the South African Border War, which lasted from 1966 to 1990 (this book covers the last five years of that conflict). This was an insurgency war, which the nationalist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) and others, fought against the apartheid government in South Africa. The war ended with the independence of Namibia on 21 March 1990, enabling them to form a national government.

I gave this book Highmark's strictly for format and the photography. During this timeframe South African service members were not allowed to have cameras on operations or take pictures in general for operational security reasons. Understand that this book is all amateur photography, mostly black and white. The quality of the photos are what they are at times; grainy, blurring and other imperfections. However this does not distract from this book at all, if anything it gives it a more intense feel. But what does detract from the book is the one sided anti-apartheid tone, the books text is definitely not balanced. Fortunately there is limited text other than the lengthy introduction by Hayes.

The book is broken down in to three major chapters. Chapter one covers the war itself, while chapter two covers the interim period prior to independence. While the last chapter covers the after math of the conflict with dialogue between the two authors.

Overall, this is a very interesting book, despite the obvious biased anti-apartheid take in this book. The photograph gives an incredible look into this brutal conflict and will give the reader a new perspective on the hardships of this war. Well worth getting to add to your Bush War library."

  • This collection of photos by John Liebenberg illustrates the fighting which took place in what is now Namibia between 1986 and 1990. Namibia was at that time part of the South African Union which then lived under the policy of Apartheid. The war had been going on since the 1960s, when the South-West African People's Organization (SWAPO) began a war of terror and infiltration from Angola (soon to be independent from Portugal and a Marxist state). South Africa did everything they could to stem the Cuban- and Angolan-backed insurgency, including ruthless counterterror within Namibia, border operations and even a full-scale operation at one point. This photo essay looks at the final stage, where South Africa fought its final battles, then gave up Namibia and the white-only government stepped down to "native" rule. An interesting book.
