This exclusive Signet Classic edition contains 203 of Aesop’s most enduring and popular fables, translated into readable, modern American English and beautifully illustrated with classic woodcuts by the great French artist J. J. Grandville.

It is both amazing and wonderful that so much of the richness of our language and our moral education still owes a huge debt to a Greek slave who was executed more than two thousand years ago. Yet “sour grapes,” “crying ‘wolf,’” “actions speak louder than words,” “honesty is the best policy,” and literally hundreds of other metaphors, axioms, and ideas that are now woven into the very fabric of Western culture all came from Aesop’s Fables. An extraordinary storyteller who used cunning foxes, surly dogs, clever mice, fearsome lions, and foolish humans to describe the reality of a harsh world, Aesop created narratives that are appealing, funny, politically astute, and profoundly true. And Aesop’s truth—often summed up in the pithy “moral of the story”—retains an awesome power to affect us, reaching us through both our intellects and our hearts.

Including

“The Fox and the Grapes”
“The Ants and the Grasshopper”
“The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse”
…and 200 Other Famous Fables

Edited and with an Afterword by Jack Zipes
With an Introduction by Sam Pickering

"Classic Aesop's not the watered down "feel good" versions available in most copies today. Good lessons, with the original consequences. Definitely worth it if you don't want your kids to be "snowflakes" (easily melted) in the midst of adversity and the need for critical thinking and discernment."

Aesop Fables Signet Classics Aesop Jack Zipes Sam Pickering 9780451529534 Books Reviews

  • Lovely art if that is what you are getting it for. If you are getting it to read to you children them skip this version. I have an older edition and the language is rich, eloquent and beautiful. Why do we insist on dumbing down our children? Trust me, kids can understand dynamic language just fine. This is a poor edition.
  • Based on the reviews I made sure to purchase a hardback edition. However, we purchased a used edition from an independent seller. We got the 1st edition from Chronicle books, however it did not look like the pictures. I have attached some pictures to show. The Rose and the butterfly picture is included in the book but is not on the cover. Each fable is illustrated by a different artist. This is an interesting approach, but I don't always care for all the styles.

I bought this for my daughter who is 3. She's a bit young to understand the moral lesson of the fables, however this is a nice book to have in a child's library. I have been enjoying reading the fables which I hadn't read since I was a child, as now I am better able to appreciate the morals.
  • Classic Aesop's not the watered down "feel good" versions available in most copies today. Good lessons, with the original consequences. Definitely worth it if you don't want your kids to be "snowflakes" (easily melted) in the midst of adversity and the need for critical thinking and discernment.
  • Aesop's fables have been around for two thousand five hundred years. Their morals apply to real life.

Most readers will be familiar with a handful of them such as The Fox and the Grapes and The Tortoise and the Hare. These are well-known for a reason – they are the best of them. The total collection runs to three hundred or so stories, most of which are not as well worth repeating.

However, the price is right and the good ones are true gems. They have been translated into every world language. They are short – usually half a page apiece. As a substitute teacher of foreign languages I have often used them to keep a class occupied for forty-five minutes. Most schools have minimal expectations of substitute teachers. They expect us to show a movie such as Finding Nemo in German, Spanish French or whatever to occupy the period. The kids of course go to sleep – they have seen the movie a hundred times in English. Aesop's fables is a great alternative. It keeps them awake and engaged. They might even learn something.
  • As other reviewers have said, the worst thing about this is the fact that the stories have all been "updated". A lot of the charm was lost from the original stories, at least in my opinion. The morals do still remain, so it doesn't make them irrelevant. The pictures are extremely beautiful, too, so if you don't mind the changes to the story, then it's well worth a dollar.
  • The CD is an excellent addition to this book! While the book contains over 100 stories the CD covers 42 of the best of them and references the title of each story and the page it can be found in the book.

For parents who would like to convert the disc to MP3 files and add the story/track information here is a list of are all the stories on the CD. If you use J. River Media Center the track information has also been uploaded to their servers so it should automatically add it when you rip/convert the CD to MP3 files.

  • I LOVE THIS VERSION of Aesop's Fables! The illustrations are gorgeous, and there are so many of the original tales. I buy this for every ohmigoodness-I'm-pregnant moment that my friends inevitably have. Sometimes, I will buy several at a time, just so that I have one on hand when the moment occurs.

SUGGESTIONS For the perfect children's literature additions, find a used copy of Udo Weigelt's "The Sandman" (it is sadly out of print), and also get Mary Engelbreit's "Mother Goose". Both of those books are just lovely, absolute musts!
  • This edition has a big omission-"The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf" is not in this version of Aesops Fables. Regarding the illustrations-all characters are depicted as animals, which is correct in many, but not all of Aesop Fables. Text accompanying each story is only fair, not really good. I would not recommend this version. There are much better, and more complete versions of Aesops Fables available.
