Whole Food Slow Cooked 100 Recipes for the Slow Cooker or Stovetop Olivia Andrews 9781592337538 Books Reviews

  • I've got to say, I'm completely delighted by this cookbook. When I purchased it there was not a single review on it, but I decided to just go for it. This time of year is incredibly busy for my family - between school, sports, and work for my family of four, I just never seem to have enough time. I was desperately in need of a slow cooker cookbook that's recipes were not just easy to use, but healthy and, more importantly, interesting and flavorful. I've been so disappointed in the past by cookbooks in the Fix It and Forget category where they just threw a bunch of uncurrated recipes at you that all ended up tasting the same and used processed, unhealthy, and high sodium ingredients.

This book couldn't be further from that. First off the book is lovely. The photography and design are stunning. The pages have a nice matte feel to them. I wish it was hardback, but I'm sure this would have doubled the price of the book. The author gives you both slow cooker and stove top or oven directions for each recipe. Perhaps my only complaint is she doesn't indicate which method is better suited towards the recipe.

Most of the recipes are for diners, but she also includes a section on dessert and even breakfast. I can't wait to try the Coconut Brown Rice Pudding with Banana and Ginger. The recipes are quite internationally inspired. From French, to German, Moroccan, Mexican, Asian; she grabs influences from all over the globe. Many of the recipes are the throw it in and turn on the slow cooker variety. Others require several steps, so you'll need to read through that first to see what works best with your schedule that day. Her ingredients range from normal every day cuts of meat to the more unique. And while not all of you will have duck on hand like the two taking up valuable real estate in my freezer, there are plenty of more common cuts of meat like pork shoulder, chicken drumsticks and thighs, ground beef, and beef roasts. Myself, I'll probably never make any of the squid or octopus recipes (I wish though). I also really appreciate that there are quite a few lamb recipes. We raise meat sheep, so I'm always on the lookout for new recipes that aren't just a garlic and lemon variation. Several of the cuts of meat (beef and pork cheeks, shins, and oxtail) aren't ones I've used before but you can be sure the next time we butcher one of our steers I'm going to be asking to keep those. Until then I feel confident I'll be able to pick up these inexpensive cuts of meats at our local supermarket because even though I live in a rural area, we have a thriving Latino community that uses those cuts regularly.

Overall I'm so happy with his book. It's so full of flavorful, and inspired recipes that I've got more recipes that not bookmarked to try. Tonight it's the Duck and Mushroom Ragu and tomorrow it's Cauliflower and Cannellini Bean Soup with Pancetta. Yum!
  • I'm a passionate and experience cook. I own lots of cookbooks, a few are for slow cooker. This slow cooker book is by far my favorite. The food in here are fantastic. The directions are easy to follow. You can cook them in the slow cooker and they turn out just as good as if it was done in an oven. The author does a great job in giving you options in all of her recipes, look in the slow cooker or other methods. Recipes are unique and unusual, above and beyond what you find in a regular slow cooker book. I have tried a few of them and my favors are Butter miso mushroom risotto. Pork and pineapple tacos. And a Malaysian beef and potato rendang curry. All delicious!
  • I just bought this book at the paper store and the first recipe I made out of it was fantastic! It was the pineapple and pork. I have bookmarked a bunch of recipes, all sound tasty, good for you and not complicated. Great cookbook! Also love that they give you both the slow cooker and oven direction.
  • I can't believe there aren't more reviews for this cookbook. I bought mine at an independent bookstore on Orcas Island, WA, in early October and have cooked out of it more than a dozen times already. It's the best slow cooker cookbook out there, and really, the best collection of slow cooker recipes I've ever found. We also traveled extensively recently through southeast Asia and the curry recipes in here are fantastic. Have recommended it to several people already!
